Chapter Eighteen
Sage
I move as stealthily through the house as I can, but I know itâs likely heâs watching all of us on the camera. All I can do is hope that he wants to confront me. If he manages to avoid all four of us until Mayhem is over, I donât know what Iâll do.
I know I could pull some of my employees away from the party, but that might arouse suspicions among the guests. Iâll save that for a last resort.
Iâve already found two of my guards deadâJohn and Samuelâand I wonder how many more heâs killed.
I canât wait to get my hands on him. What he doesnât realize is that all heâs doing is building my rage, my darkness within me with every kill. Yes, I employ these men and women, but theyâve been like family to me. Theyâre the only family Iâve had in the last ten years.
Yes, I was the one who cut off most communication with my parents, but that didnât make it any easier. It had taken a few years for me to really come around, but most of these people have been with me since the beginning. I pay well, and itâs a built in family. Itâs hard for people to walk away from that.
And here Cary is killing them. The only thing that would piss me off more is if he came after one of my guys. Then Iâd tear him limb from limb.
A door opens right in front of me, and I donât quite get out of the way in time. The corner hits my forehead, sending a blinding pain through me as I fall to the floor.
I struggle to right myself, eyes blinking against the pain.
âI knew it was only a matter of time before you found me,â Cary says as he leans down close to my face. âSo I decided I would make it easy for you. I figured out which way you were going and then settled into this room to wait for you.â
He shakes his head. âDid you really think I wouldnât recognize you, baby girl?â
I flinch, hating his pet name and hating myself for freezing the moment I knew it was him looming over me. I have to force myself to breathe, telling myself over and over again that this isnât ten years ago. Iâm not a sixteen-year-old girl who doesnât know how to fight back. Now, Iâm a twenty-six-year-old woman who has trained for this moment.
Iâve got to get my shit together.
When I donât answer, Cary sneers before slamming his hand into my face. âThatâs fine. Be a bitchâyou always were.â
Pain floods through me once more, blood spilling from my nose. I try to lift my hand to my face, but Cary grabs it and drags me into the room. The door slams shut behind us just before his foot meets my ribs again and again, and I canât fight back my grunt of pain.
âYou might have changed your hair and painted your face like this, but those eyes? Iâd know them anywhereâIâd know you anywhere.
